  2. Aaron, I am so excited for you and your wife. It's an awesome and exhausting journey, but well worth it! Sorry I took so long to reply. We sold our old house (closed in Novemeber) and had to live with my mother while we finished the house. She doesn't have internet...it was terrible! So, we are living in the house now and all is done except the yard. It's hard to landscape in January. Anyway, I am playing catch up with the blog so hopefully it will help you during your building process. If you run into any problems, which I'm sure you will, feel free to email me. I would be glad to help if I can. So, where are you building?

  3. Hi Elizabeth, My wife and I are also in the planning stages of building our home. We love the Tucker Bayou style but overall may not be a good fit for northen climates since the original design has so many windows. We also feel like the original design has a lot more sqare footage than we need. Can you tell me what is your sqare footage for the first floor and second floor area? also I am tring to figure out what your layout looks like, would you have a scribble that you could post? By the way, your house looks great!

    1. Bernie, Thank you for your questions and reading my blog! The square footage of our house is a total of 2665 sq ft. The first floor is 1675 sq ft and the second floor is 990 sq ft. I have thought about posting our floor plan, I am just concerned with copyright laws. We paid a private designer to do the plan for us and I am not sure what she would think about it. But, I'm going to try and figure that out and get the floor plan posted. Thanks again.

    2. Thanks Elizabeth, that would be pretty much what we would be looking to build, The development where we purchased our land has a minimum of 2,600 sq ft for a 2 story home. I am just having a hard time trying to figure a way to shrink the original plan to something smaller and attach a garage to it as well. Seems like your garage is now on the opposite side as what you have in your plans am I right? Looking forward to some of your answers, seems like you are very much enjoying your home. One more quick question. I am assuming that your living room is on the left as you enter the residence, do you get sunshine/light in the room since it's located under a good size porch? Thanks

    3. Bernie, First of all, I am still working on getting the floor plan posted and I almost there. Now to answer your questions, the garage is on the opposite side, but the entire plan was reversed when we built. With the way our property lays we could have put the garage on either side, but when it came time to break ground we decided to flip the plan. So, the living room is actually on the right when you are facing the front of the house, but it's in the back so it is still under the porch. We were pleasantly surprised at how much light we still get inside the house! Not only do we have a 9 ft deep porch, we also have an additional 2 ft overhang. The 2 ft overhang goes around the entire house. We did however pick lighter colors for the interior. We have a pretty light shade of hardwood and a light blue paint on the walls. To contrast the light colors we did a dark wood trim and doors. I hope all this helps with developing your plan.

  4. Yes it really helps Elizabeth. We are meeting with your draftsmen tomorrow to get started on some plans. I also pleased to hear that you are getting a good amount of sunlight. Would you happen to know in what direction your home is facing? We'll be facing South and I think that this will be perfect. A couple more questions if you don't mind. Now that it's all done, would you say that you have 1) Just enough room, 2) A little more than what you need or 3) Feels a little tight? and Looking back, what would you do differently?

    1. Bernie, Sorry it has taken so long to reply. One of the worst parts about moving into a new house is how long it takes to get internet, phone and tv service! In other words, we still do not have internet service at home and we have been snowed-in! Anyway, to answer your questions, our house faces North/NorthEast. The back corner of the house where the living room is faces West. And I feel like we have more room than we need right now, but our kids are small so I plan on kind of growing into it. We also moved from a 1500 sq ft house that had almost no closets and no basement. So our new basement is bigger than our old house! I keep reminding myself that our kids will be teenagers and we will love having the space that we have. I hope the meeting with your draftsmen went well. I know it took us a few months to finalize our plan.
